Blue Zones Food Environment Focus Group –
Community Input Needed
The Peninsula Healthcare District (PHCD) is currently conducting a community assessment in partnership with Blue Zones as part of the Blue Zones Ignite initiative in San Mateo County. This effort aims to better understand what is working well in our communities—and where there are opportunities to make healthy choices easier for residents of all ages.
As part of this process, community members and local stakeholders are invited to participate in a Food Environment Focus Group to share insights about food access, policies, and opportunities to support healthier lifestyles across the region.
The assessment serves communities throughout PHCD’s service area, including Millbrae, San Bruno, Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, portions of Foster City, and southeast South San Francisco.
Why Participate?
Your feedback will help inform the Blue Zones Ignite readiness and feasibility assessment and guide future strategies to improve community well-being. The focus group will help:
-
Identify strengths and gaps in the local food environment
-
Highlight opportunities to improve access to healthy foods
-
Provide real-world insight into policies, programs, and community needs
Focus Group Details
Date: Tuesday, April 28
Time: 1:00 – 2:30 PM
Location: allcove San Mateo
During the session, participants will discuss how the local food environment—including grocery access, school meals, fresh food availability, and community programs—affects everyday choices and long-term health outcomes.
Blue Zones communities often explore initiatives such as:
-
Increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables
-
Supporting farm-to-school programs
-
Expanding farmers' markets and community gardens
-
Improving affordability and availability of healthy foods
Space is limited to ensure a productive discussion. Participants are encouraged to RSVP early to reserve a spot.
